Skirts and More Skirts is part of a series of monographs on fashion published by Zanfi Editore, "1900 - History of Fashion."

The skirt existed from the very beginning. Telling the story of the skirt is like narrating the endless story of humanity. The first garment, whether of fur or fabric, that men and women draped around their bodies had the form of a large skirt, high-waisted because it was held in at the center of the torso. Alternatively, there was the first miniskirt - a loincloth wrapped around the hips for those who lived in warmer climates. From the beginning it was skirts for everyone, and later with the sexual differentiation of clothing, only for women.

Because of this garment - sometimes abbreviated and therefore embarrassing - society imposed rules of propriety in order to protect other virtues including modesty. The tale of the morphology and evolution of the skirt emphasizes the union of femininity and ideology and, following the course of fashion over the centuries, underlines the liberating revolutions that are identified with it becoming shorter and shorter. In the time of the suffragettes, for example, the prescribed fashion was very long skirts so restrictive that unless worn with moderation they would cause women to trip and fall.

The skirt has stimulated the attention of the creators of fashion, seducing their audacity, and has been transformed from the Cinderella of the wardrobe to an indispensable garment of elegance. Bit by bit women have pushed back the restrictions of their daily lives, wearing the skirt any time and everywhere with stylish nonchalance. Maxi-long to the ground, ready to be tripped on, to the ankle, midi to mid-calf, to the knee, mini or micro-short the skirt, ever-present in fashion of the 20th century, marks with regular evolutions the vital adventure of free and easy femininity affirmed with decision .
